Naturally people would rather go to a safe place when struck with mental illness. While it can be beneficial, on the long run it may not be sufficient.

Getting a job may be a powerful remedy for recovery. Work has been proven to be a meaningful activity by which a person can express their creative potentials, get strong sense of achievement and definitely earn some money.

What supported employment means

Supported employment means integrated work. You will be working alongside people who don't have a mental health diagnosis. Supported employment means ongoing support. You will be getting assistance on and oft the job to remain successfully employed. Supported employment does not mean sheltered employment.

Guiding principles for supported employment services in New Zealand. by ASENZ (Advisors for Supported Employment Providers in New Zealand) and they are as follows:

  • Client Eligability for Services

    NZ Residents and NZ Citizens residing in the North Shore and Rodney area who are diagnosed with mental illness or identify themselves as such, and: Are NZ Citizens or Permanent residents between 16 to 64 years of age. Also be one of the following: - be receiving a main benefit or their partner or -have applied for and been assessed as eligible for a main benefit or -have been receiving a main benefit that has been cancelled because they have moved into employment ot -have applied for a main benefit but need to complete pre-benefit activities or -have contacted the Ministry of Social Development or the service provider seeking assistance to obtain or retain employment or -be applying for Supported living patment (sickness, injury, disability) or -be receiving NZ Superannuation or a Veteran's Pension as a non-qualified spouse or partner. Exemptions: -when a person qualifies for vocational rehabilitation from the Accident Compensation Corporation -when a person is still enrolled in school
  • What Happens Once I get a Job

    Our service doesn’t cease to exist once a person gets a job. Before you start your job we will go through your employment agreement to make sure that it does comply with employment legislation. We strongly recommend our jobseekers to read through an employment agreement before they sign it off. Support services will be then shaped according to your needs and your working schedule - to sustain the job, take further education while employed, or change jobs and develop your career further.
